Abstract
H. Rider Haggard’s King Solomon’s Mines (1885) was addressed to adolescent boy readers who were expected to grow into the future administrators of the British Empire. Beneath its adventure plot lies a problem that existing scholarship on race and empire in the novel has left largely unexamined: how a text aimed at children comes to instill imperial values without appearing to instruct at all. This paper examines how Haggard embeds colonial values within King Solomon’s Mines to address that problem, employing Foucault’s concepts of power and knowledge alongside Althusser’s concept of interpellation to explore how the novel shapes colonial subjectivity among its adolescent readers. Four intersecting themes structure the analysis: racial difference, masculine identity, imperial loyalty, and what might be called an aspirational geography of discovery, each examined through close reading of key passages in the novel. Haggard, the analysis contends, does not impose colonial values directly; rather, he embeds them within the pleasures of the narrative, inviting the implied reader to absorb and imitate these values without question. King Solomon’s Mines thus emerges as an ideological instrument in the service of empire, a reading that contributes a new account of how colonial adventure fiction shapes its adolescent readership.
