Abstract

The present study aims to explore the requirements for enhancing Dynamic Smart Leadership (DSL) to achieve sustainable competitive advantage in Saudi universities. Within the framework of Saudi universities’ efforts to support institutional excellence and contribute effectively to the realization of Saudi Vision 2030, DSL emerges as a strategic approach to address contemporary challenges, adapt to rapid changes, and manage crises with both human and technological efficiency. The study employed a descriptive analytical method and utilized a questionnaire as the primary tool for data collection. The instrument was administered to a sample of 207 academic leaders (deans, vice-deans, and department heads) from seven Saudi public universities. Participants were selected using a stratified random sampling technique to ensure balanced representation across institutions and leadership positions. The findings revealed that Saudi universities exert significant efforts to achieve sustainable competitiveness and institutional excellence. However, the results highlighted the continuous need to adopt modern administrative approaches, particularly DSL, to strengthen adaptability and resilience. Moreover, the study demonstrated a positive and statistically significant correlation at the 0.01 level between DSL practices and the achievement of sustainable competitive advantage, confirming that reinforcing DSL is a key pathway to sustaining institutional excellence. Based on these findings, the study recommends: (1) adopting an integrated mix of digital transformation, strategic planning, positive organizational culture, and resource development; (2) designing training programs for university leaders focusing on artificial intelligence skills and dynamic analysis; (3) fostering a growth mindset and transparency within academic environments; and (4) leveraging the expertise of senior faculty members in shaping university strategies and policies.
